We’ve reached a point on the internet where we have play books on running startups, engineering best practices, product management and design. But we have close to no peer written resources about workplace sexual harassment.
In fact, in every company I’ve worked at so far, the sexual harassment policy on their employee handbook is the least updated. My favourite is when the list of people you can reach out to includes people who haven’t worked there for 2 years. Because who gives a fuck right? Let’s update our dress code policy for remote work but who cares about sexual harassment?
Which is ironic because most women and several men have been sexually harassed at work. They’ve had managers proposition them, they’ve had colleagues obsessively try to sleep with them and they’ve been in cultures that turn a blind eye.
But we all pretend like everything changed after #MeToo in 2017.
However, in the last 4 years, among other cases, Activision Blizzard settled a discrimination lawsuit for $18 million and Ford for $10.25 million.
I’d like to say this is probably a sign that some companies are finally being held accountable to the way they treat women.
But it more likely is not. Remember the 1990s when Mitsubishi settled a sexual discrimination lawsuit for $38 million and Ford for $7.5 million?
To me, the real takeaway is that managers cannot get shit done without sleeping with their employees. And of course, that tech is a “meritocracy”.
Thankfully, over the years, we’ve had some excellent suggestions. Here is my favourite:

But considering that some of the brightest people I know are women, we might have to find a solution that is less…limbic? And also what if a woman is running the company? Should she not hire any hot young male Stanford grads?
Maybe the law will finally have to get its act together. But until that day comes, here is a short playbook on workplace sexual harassment.
In this guide, I choose to help not only victims but also predators make the best use of a broken system.
